Employment

We are looking for staff for various positions from preschool to middle school.

Since we opened CGK International School in Yokohama in 2016, we have been providing a curriculum of inquiry-based learning along with high quality childcare.

We have opened an international preschool and an international afterschool (for elementary students) in Bashamichi and Kannai in Yokohama and are planning to open a combined Elementary, Middle and High School.

Part of our basic policy at CGK is our pledge to "Cherish Others".

Some international schools do not always provide the best environment for children and teachers. Since the number of international schools is smaller than regular Japanese schools, naturally, the number that can offer a quality environment is even smaller. International schools have more demands than normal schools. Also, operating with a diverse group of multi-national teachers creates a diverse environment that can make it difficult to keep everyone together and focused in the same direction while maintaining high quality.

Rather than using these difficulties as an excuse for compromise, CGK always strives for improvement so that everyone involved with CGK can lead a happy and fulfilling life. We are convinced that good school management is not possible without providing a fulfilling work life for each and every member of the faculty and staff, who are the foundation of the school, not just focusing on students and parents.

Because the roles, responsibilities, and skills required of educators and childcare workers are extremely diverse, we strongly believe that educators and childcare workers should be more highly valued in Japan, and we will continue to earnestly address and improve problems such as long working hours and low wages.

At CGK, we will continue to grow by creating an environment where dedicated staff can actively work with a positive spirit, cherishing the time spent with children with a smile and a sense of security.

Ratio of Male / Female Employees

    As of April 2023

  • 02

  • 03

    Retention Rate

    94.4%

*Actual in FY2022 (Retention rate = number of employees enrolled at the beginning of the term after one year / number of employees enrolled at the beginning of the term x 100
    *Full-time employees only

75.0%(FY2016)→71.4%(FY2017)→77.8%(FY2018)→70.0%(FY2019)→78.6%(FY2020)→80.0%(FY2021)→94.4%(FY2022). In order to improve staff retention rate, the following measures are being taken.

Clarify the school's policy and direction, and honestly communicate the actual situation without any falsehoods.

Improve the working environment and create an environment that facilitates a better work-life balance.

  • 04

    Overtime Work

    Monthly average: 10.4 hours (FY2021)

16.6(FY2017)→15.2(FY2018)→10.5(FY2019)→9.0(FY2020)→10.4(FY2021). After opening in 2016, the school has grown from 3 students to approximately 100 students. The amount of work has increased significantly, but the situation is improving year by year and deteriorated only slightly in 2021. The number is not yet as small as we'd like, but we continue to take measures to reach our goal of 5 hours/month. Of course, there is no unpaid overtime or take-home work.

  • 05

    Paid Leave Utilization Rate

25%(FY2016)→42%(FY2017)→83%(FY2018)→106%(FY2019)→56%(FY2020)→78%(FY2021)→79%(FY2022). We employ a sufficient number of teachers and have a system in place that provides ample cover for teachers on vacation. From 2019, we created a system to encourage employees to take long vacations. Some teachers have taken about 3 weeks with summer vacation, and others took time off for more than a month including voluntary isolation periods because of COVID-19. We hope teachers enjoy this time off in a meaningful way with short or long-term travel or study abroad. (In 2020, due to COVID-19, the number of applicants wishing to take paid leave decreased.) Of course, part-time staff also take paid leave (the above results include part-time staff).

  • 06

Maternity / Paternity Leave Utilization Rate

    Female: 100%, Male: 100%

As of July 2023. Both men and women are encouraged to take childcare leave. In addition to childcare leave, some male employees have taken paternity leave. After returning to work, employees can work shorter hours, creating an environment conducive to long-term work.

  • 07

    Number of Holidays Per Year

    Approx. 130 - 140 days

Every year, about 130 days (about 140 days in Elementary School). In addition to summer and winter vacations, staff take paid vacations to enjoy their personal lives.

  • 08

    Parental Satisfaction

    9.1

Average Score of 9.1 out of 10 (FY2022)

Implemented at CGK Preschool. 9.1(FY2021/Response-rate 93.8%)→9.1(FY2022/Response-rate 77.8%). Although a registered-type questionnaire, based on this high level of satisfaction, CGK continues to grow.

  • 09

    Qualified Nursery Teachers

    100%

Japanese teachers in Preschool (excluding office staff and bus staff)

International schools are not places that educate only English. In order to provide high quality childcare and education with an eye on the non-cognitive skills that are truly important in early childhood, we require all Japanese teachers in our preschools to be qualified as nursery teachers and to have a high level of English proficiency.
In other words, international preschools in Japan that meet these standards are very rare.

Employees Benefits / Welfare

Cabinet Office "Babysitter" Discount Coupons (conditions of use apply)

CGK is eligible for the Cabinet Office "Babysitter" Discount Coupons, and therefore, these coupons of 2,200 yen are available for staff members. Two coupons per child per day, up to 24 coupons per month (the equivalent of 52,800 yen).

Future Challenges and Initiatives

Human Resource Development / Overseas Training

We aim for an environment where employees can improve their skills and enhance their careers.

Further Reduction of Overtime

We are taking measures to reach our goal of only 5 hours of overtime per month.

Short-term Study Abroad Support

As a working adult, it is difficult to study abroad unless you retire. However, for employees at an international school, studying abroad is an experience that directly relates to work quality, so we are considering establishing a study abroad support system.

Overseas Business Development

Many staff members working in international schools have an inclination towards life overseas. Working at an ordinary school, there would be no chance to be experience life overseas unless one retired and went abroad. CGK would like to expand its business overseas in the future and give staff members who wish it the opportunity to relocate overseas. Since an overseas business would not only enhance the career planning options of our staff members, but would also enhance of CGK's curriculum and programs, we are working on plans to make this a reality.

Official Language

The official language in the company is English. As a rule, Japanese staff also speak English with each other (except when communication in Japanese is necessary).

Work Colleagues

CGK has many experienced employees, but we do not hire solely on the basis of experience and skill. Because we are in a position to influence children's lives and need to work with our colleagues as a team, we place importance on the overall strength of character of the individual, including their personality.

In addition, we have created an open work environment where Japanese and non-Japanese staff members are able to express their opinions to each other on an equal footing.

Application Requirements

We are creating a better environment for children and staff by actively incorporating new ideas from our staff. We are a place where employees can continue to work for a long time while enhancing skills and career. We look forward to hearing from you!

    FAQ

[Preschool] You have a full curriculum, but which teachers teach what?

There are many lessons and activities that are planned and taught in partnership with specialized teachers and institutions. Neither bilingual Japanese nor foreign teachers need specialized expertise that would require specific qualifications (Japanese teachers must be qualified as nursery school teachers).

Are you taking any measures to reduce the workload of your staff?

We have a full range of ICT equipment, including computers. Curriculum, teaching materials, records of past lessons and events, and other data are all managed in the cloud, so lessons and event preparation can be handled smoothly and efficiently.
Taking advantage of the fact that the preschool, elementary school, and afterschool are non-accredited, we make rational decisions and cut unnecessary documentation. With very few written documents, and the active use of applications and other tools to communicate with parents, we have been able to significantly save time.
CGK avoids the typical bad practices of many nurseries, such as making employees pay for their own books and supplies, take work home, or not paying for overtime work.
Also, although handmade decorations at events and handmade teaching materials, etc. are very nice, they can be a huge burden on teachers. Therefore, we are willing to purchase commercially available products that can save time and effort.

Do we really get a full one-hour lunch break?

Of course, there is a one-hour lunch break every day. It is not uncommon in preschools for teachers to be expected to eat lunch with the children, or to fill out children's correspondence notebooks during the lunch break. At CGK, it's a truly a one-hour lunch break, so of course it's OK to go out for lunch in the fashionable city of Yokohama!

Please explain about the hiring process.

Application → Interviews (twice) → Job offer / Hiring.
When you apply, please send us not only your CV but also your resume / career history to facilitate the interview process. This does not have to be in very official format, you can create whatever you feel is appealing and send it to us.

[Preschool] I can't play the piano, is that okay?

At CGK, playing the piano is not a requirement. Of course, being able to play the piano is a great advantage in teaching music, but we do not refuse to hire people on the basis of their inability to play the piano.

Do you have a housing subsidy or a company housing program?

We do not have either, but if you are moving from a rural area or have other special circumstances, feel free to contact us personally for consultation.
If you use the real estate agency affiliated with CGK, you can receive a discount equal to 60% of month's rent on agency fees (*may not be available in special cases). Service in English is also available for teachers who are foreign nationals.
