Social Studies Lesson for Project Work/ソーシャルスタディレッスン紹介

Here is an introduction to lessons at CGK Afterschool.
CGKアフタースクールでのレッスンについて紹介いたします。

CGK's two-month-long project works will be based on the main “Driving Question”.
Here are the Driving Questions for this "Social Study" lesson.
CGKの2ヶ月間に渡って行うプロジェクト活動では、メインとなる「ドライビングクエスチョン」に基づいて学んでいきます。
今回の「ソーシャルスタディ」レッスンでのドライビングクエスチョンはこちらです。

"How can we uncover and share stories about our communities?"
私たちの街にある歴史やストーリーをどのように発掘することができるでしょうか？

The lesson theme was "Community history."
レッスンテーマは「コミュニティーの歴史」です。

We followed this theme and question with fun lessons each week that drew the student's interest.
Here are the comments of Mr. Bobby, the teacher who was in charge of the lessons.
このテーマと問いに沿って、毎週子どもたちの興味を引き出す楽しいレッスンを行いました。
担当していたBobby先生のコメントに訳をつけてご紹介します。

 
Week 1
Students learned about perspective and how that can shape people’s views. Students were broken into groups and given a piece of a picture of a frog. They were then told to draw what they think the complete picture is.
1週目、生徒たちは「perspective＝視点」について学び、この視点が人々の見方をどのように形成するか考えました。この日行った活動は、グループごとに分かれ、各グループにカエルの絵の一部が配られました。そして、絵の完成形をイメージして絵を描くことに挑戦しました。
 
Week 2
Continuing with perspective the students read the story about seven blind mice and how perspective works. Students discussed the story and what they learned about perspective. Students researched different animals and thought about their perspective.
「perspective」の続きを学ぶため、生徒たちは「Seven Blind Mice」の話を読み、「perspective」の仕組みについて考えました。このお話は目の見えないネズミたちが崖を登ったり大きな扇風機にあおられそうになったと思っていたものが、実際には全く別のものだったというお話です。物語や「perspective」について学んだことを話し合ったあと、他の動物について同じように別の視点、観点がないかディスカッションしました。
 
Week 3
Students finished their research on an animals perspective and presented it.
生徒たちは先週の続きである、「Seven Blind Mice」以外の他の動物に関してリサーチを終わらせ、分かったことを発表しました。
 
Week 4
Students read the story about the fish and the frog and created a diagram about perspective. Using what they learned they talked about each animals perspective.
生徒たちは「魚とカエル」の物語を読み、「perspective」について読み取ったことを図にまとめました。これまで学んできたことを活かして、それぞれの動物の視点について話しました。
 
 

Week 5
Students introduced to final project. Students went over the questions as a class helped to think about new questions. Students were given their interview packets and thought about who they will interview.
今週は、最終プロジェクトについて話しました。最終プロジェクトは家族の方に今と昔の街の変化についてインタビューし、同じ街でもいろいろな見方があることを知り、これまで学んできたことを活かしてインタビューした内容をまとめるというものです。生徒たちは初めにパケットにある質問について確認し、そのあと自分たちで新しい質問を考えました。家族の中で誰にインタビューするのか考え、パケットを持ち帰り宿題に取り組むことになりました。
 
Week 6
Students worked on their interviews and discussed perspective.
生徒たちはインタビューしてきたものをまとめ、さまざまな視点・見方についてディスカッションしました。
 
Week 7-8
Students finalized and translated their interviews from Japanese to English. Students then spent time to create draw their images for their translations and practiced what to say.
生徒たちは日本語でインタビューしてきたものを英語に訳し、プレゼンテーションの準備をしました。また、交通機関の変化について絵でまとめたり、発表する内容を練習しました。

In their presentation, they talked about the history of the city, which they learned by interviewing their own family members.
They found that many vehicles and stores have changed compared to the town when their grandmothers, grandfathers, and parents were small children.
プレゼンテーションでは、自分たちの家族にインタビューして分かった街の歴史について発表しました。
お祖母さん、お祖父さん、またご両親が小さかったときの街と比べて現在は乗り物もお店もたくさん変化していることが分かりました。

This familiar history of their own families, their own cities, etc., also helped them learn more about themselves, and triggered a familiar interest in their own life.
There were many things that they take for granted now that were unthinkable a long time ago.
I hope that by learning about these different perspectives, the students will feel that there are different ways of thinking and seeing things.
このように自分の家族、自分の街など身近な歴史を知ることでより自分自身について知ることもでき、身近な興味を引き出すきっかけになりました。
今は当たり前になっていることも、一昔前には考えられなかったということがたくさんありました。
このようなさまざまな視点を知ることで子どもたちには違った考え方や見方があることを感じて欲しいと思います。
